The Beggars Seas, Volume 1: The Seal of My Grandpa Ran

At the dawn of its 16 years, Rol Cortishane is driven from the island on which he was raised by villagers who accused her family of witches. Just before he died, his grandfather orders him to go to Ascari to find refuge with the mage Psellus. Taking the sea at night on a rickety boat, managed to reach Rol Ascari. Hosted in turn by the beautiful Psellus Rowen, he became servant to serve the one his grandfather had recommended. Rowen formed by the art of murder, he discovers that the blood running through his veins is one of those before, ancient creatures considered by some as fallen angels. This legacy will lead the young man into exile on the seas to try to leave behind a past he wants to forget.

Seal Ran, it's ultra classic fantasy, even if the text has the particularity to be composed of two distinct parts. The first resembles a novel of initiation: Ran discovers a new environment, his first sexual lives, falls in love, becomes aware of its unique capabilities and extraordinary destiny that awaits him. It the party who has the most depth. The hero may be constructed and the description of life and functioning of political Ascari provides insight into the rich world and characters presented side Psellus Rowen and are quite fascinating. In the second half of the novel, the plot is only for adventure with long-term succession of clashes over land and sea and more hectic sequence of events as each other. Pure entertainment, without any real claim.

A text to the original construction, therefore, to be read in one sitting. Nothing revolutionary certainly, but a job well done. The author knows on the fingertips the maritime world and the story is full of nautical terms more technical than each other. Personally, I was not bothered at all, even though I know absolutely nothing Marine vocabulary. The only problem in the second part, on the side "superhero" Rol. Once the situation becomes desperate he becomes a sort of "Hulk" invincible. Limit ridiculous, it removes any interest in fighting. The hero is not sufficiently sensitive, it hardly suffers at the end of the battle and we know that nothing can happen to him through his super power. Difficult in these circumstances to develop any empathy for this character when it finally realizes that nothing really bad can happen to him.

Still, this first volume suggests some interesting developments thereafter. The reunion with sulphurous Rowen ahead and clashes with bionariens should increase. A fantasy saga to discover, so even if the second volume is not yet planned in France.

Beggars seas T1: seal Ran by Paul Kearney, The Book Pocket, 2010. 426 pages. 6.95 euros.

The more info: Initially Beggars seas were starting four volumes, but after the publication of the second Anglo-Saxon the publisher decided to discontinue the series then the third volume was written entirely. As for Paul Kearns has attacked a new series entitled The Macht , it's a safe bet that we would never know the final word adventures Cortishane Rol.

Book read in the context of a partnership between Livraddict and the Pocket Book. Thank you to them!
