American Falls
A child invited to a birthday party will get back to all participants. A young Mexican woman is killed by a junkie. A serial killer returns dirty in her room after having committed the irreparable. A teen falls in love with his babysitter and runaway with it before committing a robbery. Of bumpkins from the depths of the Mississippi kill each other in a road house one evening together. That is just a few examples in this new collection of Barry Gifford. There are many other things, the atmosphere completely different: some are held in Tunisia, Egypt, France, Italy ... But the most relevant are those radiographient the decline of the American Empire.
Barry Gifford is the author of cult Sailor and Lula . It when it becomes a chronicler of the ills of his country that his work takes on a breathtaking scale. The problem with this book is that there are too many differences between the texts. So much so that one wonders if we are not in a book as a whole is heterogeneous. All this looks like a collage of disparate elements so it is difficult to detect any common thread. Another important point is that Gifford likes to tip all these texts in the last sentences. Much like a painter who, having conscientiously applied on the canvas, tears Suddenly cutter.
A collection so strange, a bit wobbly. Nevertheless, I am glad to have discovered a major American writer who has a keen eye on the decay of the American nation. To finish and give you an overview of content, I put this little excerpt is actually the back cover. It also follows the reading of this text that I decided to buy the book, even if ultimately it is only a tiny facet of the collection and its great variety.
"Tico Mariposa took Cookie Cruz in his room above the bar Buena Suerte, corner of Avenues 16 de Septiembre and Pancho Villa. Tired after a day's work, Cookie was in no hurry to go make dinner for her mother, so she accepted the shoot that he offered him. At one point, she faints and when she awoke, Tico was trying to rape her. She screamed so loud that he flung his right fist in the jaw. She was bleeding and crying, Tico the round to try to stick him in the ass.

Cookie crawled on all fours, grabbed a small lamp with no lampshade and swung behind her in Figure Tico; the bulb shattered. Tico Cookie dropped; she jumped up, but too dazed by drugs to keep his feet, she fell back and watched. [...] Tico stood up on his knees, took off slowly the pieces of glass from her face. Then he reached out and grabbed a handgun that he pointed it at her. "

are visited regularly ARTE Live web since it became a must. And then, one comes across a 11-minute excerpt of a concert by Jean-Marc Padovani around Sketches Septet, which had seen Colomiers some time ago. Of course we click because we love it, but really Padovani and we see that the blurb is from the blog of Souillac Jazz (specifically from the pen of Marie-Francoise). In short, to say that our ego is found it awfully inflated. So it's a little "self centered" to publish this info that is not really. But for us it is much more than that. The link

Ice Heart
Heart of Ice, Pommepuy Mary and Patrick Pion, Dargaud, 2011. 70 pages. 14.95 euros.
The carriage in which there is little Gerda was attacked on a country road by ogres. Before being devoured by them, she befriends a child ogress and related his story. For years, Gerda is on the road in search of her friend Kay. This was once kidnapped by the Ice Queen and since, Gerda goes north because she thinks it is there that is the palace of the Queen. Before landing at the ogres, she had to flee the garden of an old witch who wanted to transform it into a plant and has unwittingly destroyed the castle of a princess who was actually a horrible monster. When her friend ogress released, Gerda can finally fulfill his quest and return to Kay. But boy is it always the one she dream?
Pommepuy Mary and Patrick Pion chose to tackle one of the most famous tales of Andersen for better blast. Of the seven original parts of The Snow Queen, the authors have maintained that the episodes can be clearly imaged: the attack of robbers, removal of Kay, the witch's garden, Princess tyrannical ... But if Andersen proposed a tale altogether rather classic villains actually quite sympathetic, and Pion Pommepuy give a ghoulish vision, strange and dark discarding what they bondieuseries consider to be unnecessary: the devil, angels, hymns, prayers ... Their very freely adapted version proves frightful and the end, full of bitterness against the reality of things, leaves no room for optimism. Say the final maxim of this anti-fairy tale might be: "They did not live happy and never had any children. "
Patrick Pion has previously published series where the influence graph was to look on the side of comics (or Megaron Chrome). It changes completely register here to propose boards in a style prints before the comics, "among old illustrated books and images of Epinal. Rather dull, agonizing and tortured atmosphere that some might describe as gothic. The heavy hand of the tests that must undergo Gerda is perfectly rendered in any case. A dark tale, very dark, here is what lies behind this ... Heart of ice
An adaptation very modern and very personal aspects of which will disturb most readers. Do not put all hands then, and especially not those children.
Heart of Ice, Pommepuy Mary and Patrick Pion, Dargaud, 2011. 70 pages. 14.95 euros.

happiness to its market on Sunday morning. And this one allows himself nap in the middle of weekdays in the afternoon while the others are in full work. Not forgetting the guys went to the dealer, the chairs of the Luxembourg Gardens or even the dining terrace, a summer evening in a seaside resort ... Vendée
apology for idleness, simple joy of contemplation, quiet strolls and general reflections on the nature of things, Philippe Delerm distilled with relish those pleasures like he likes. So many snapshots where the stage is set in a few words. Often it is a matter of mood, feeling or as a simple flash back on the delicious moments.
The sidewalk in the sun, it's Delerm pure juice. The author of The last sip of beer goes where you would expect. Fans will be thrilled and his critics are unlikely not to change their minds about him. Of course, it's pretty uneven, but the disappointment of falling a few lines a bit bland never lasts long. The value of the exercise for the reader is that if a text does not hang, you can quickly bounce back to the next. In fact, you never know where lies the nugget, two or three pages that are perfectly chiseled we get a rare treat. Delerm confess at the end of a paragraph: it feels ridiculous with his desire to say good things. But this view too optimistic or peaceful existence is sometimes good in our lives could not be more anxiety.
A book to be savored in small doses that it would be inappropriate to devour in one sitting. This modest collection requires a fragmented reading: Ten or twenty pages and you close it to return a few hours or days later. My favorite word? We are not invited , a fierce discussion on these weddings where the families of the bride and groom will look in china dogs. Bénabar surely would make a nice song!

This is the story of Arnold Spitzweg, an employee of the Post Office which created a blog one day on which, against the current discourse surrounding it praises slowness. To his surprise, his personal writings seduce thousands of Internet users, which confronts him with a sudden and unexpected fame.

Say "Marmoset"!
Nikon

The photo of "marmoset" |
In most countries there is a word we use to make people smile before the a camera lens. In French we say "Marmoset" (little monkey).
The company has tested 26 different phrases in Europe to find the best smile when getting their picture taken. Under the supervision of a linguist, were told to buy these models and then we analyzed the pictures from this experience.
It turns out that the French word "marmoset" gives the best smile. In second place is the word "famiglia" ("family") of Italy, followed by "patata" (potato) and the English "Marmolada" ("marmalade") Polish. Why? It seems that the word "marmoset" will put the tongue behind the teeth, which helps produce the most beautiful smiles, and therefore more beautiful pictures.
It's a story that makes us smile and we wonder if we took into account our "Lluís" Catalan (Louis).
For now, forget the "cheese" British and say "marmoset." You are more beautiful in the pictures.

Krotokus 1 King of the Animals
Krotokus 1 king of beasts, Caryl Ferey, Pocket Jeunesse, 2010. 219 pages. 14.90 euros. From 9 years .
The more info: Férey Caryl is also and above all a writer of thrillers for adults whose last novel, Zulu, has been collecting awards: Award of the Nouvel Observateur and BibliObs noir 2009; Grand Prize of the readers of Elle 2009 (police officer); Prix Jean Amila 2009; Grand Prix crime fiction 2008.
Croland of the kingdom, the lion Krotokus first reign as a tyrant absolute. Helped by his bodyguard and his adviser chimpanzee Shita, he terrorizes his subjects, spending his time sleeping and stuff yourself in his Castle of Bones. But recently, the people scold. It requires the application of the law: if the king is not an heir before the 13th moon, it will hold elections. To avoid losing his throne, Krotokus needs his son to marry Pupus soon to become the heir. The problem is that Pupus since its birth, is only interested in boys and spent his time playing with his buddies cheetahs.
Shita imagine a marriage between a princess and Pupus butterfly Danaides country. Thus, the people will see the lion in his new king while he is in fact a puppet manipulated by his father, the latter keeping the kingdom between his legs of iron. The plan seems perfect, but is not counting on hyenas rebels, to prevent the marriage can take place, remove the Princess Butterfly ...
Caryl Férey starts with Krotokus in a huge farce, chaining and improbable adventures exciting adventures. Above all, it provides a gallery of characters each more truculent than each other: the tyrant Krotokus ridiculous Shita Councillor sly, cunning fox, the effeminate Pupus, the naive princess and her servant butterfly daisy cow ... Rarely Having such a cast, even in the fables of La Fontaine.
The other major interest is the fact that the text has several levels of interpretation. For children, humor, adventure and the final removal of the tyrant will be the highlights. The biggest will in turn in the sequence of events winks an eye to history and even recent events: seizure patterns on employees (on the island of elephants), and the fight against protectionism exacerbated immigration (on the island to old) or research legitimacy of dictatorial regimes around the development of tourism (on Komodo Island). In short, is a true story Krotokus, jubilant and very well done, even if the end may appear too simplistic for adults. A counselor at least those who want to spend some time reading with a piece of children's literature that can be shared family of several generations.

When we discover a month later the corpse of the widow Granger in the pool, familistériens beginning to look like china dogs. Who dares to attack members of the community? While police have cordoned off quickly think the case by arresting a suspect, the journalist Victor Leblanc Humanity will conduct its own investigation, aided by a young named familstérienne Ada.

Hautière Francis and pay homage to their region (Picardy) and an incredible social and industrial project In the late 19th century. Life in familistère is masterfully restored: the promiscuity, the solidarity that was falling apart over the political events in the country, distrust of familistériens against outside world ... all was not rosy in this community so special. And rather than engaging in a purely educational comic tells the story of the Social Palace, they preferred morning their own plot of the thriller elements. And this choice works because the murders and the investigation of the journalist is not an excuse to avoid the side sometimes school documentary. The killer's motivations and understand each other perfectly in this little story is very finely Great thought.
For drawings, David Francis has modeled throughout the site in 3D with familistère special software, which allowed him to maintain the proportions of buildings from one box to another. The characters and details are done on paper and then scanned before being integrated into the virtual set. It is from this that the first jet printed ink is traditionally performed before a computer-assisted colorization. This gives the final graph ambience dark gray textures and a little dirty that match the industrial landscape familystery the low sky of Picardy and the troubled times in which events take place.
If we had sought in this comic any affiliation, should look on the side of Maurice Leblanc or more probably in the Rouletabille Gaston Leroux. Anyway, here's a great opportunity to discover an unknown part of our social heritage, a time when utopia was not an empty word.

Kates Playground Civil Name
Code 1879
In London, following a series of murders, the police must seek a genealogist to find the common point between the various victims. All were strangers, they are all ages and different socio-professional categories and not all have been killed in the same way, but was found on each of them the code 1A137 "tattooed" with a sharp object on a body part. However, this code is used by municipal services to save births and deaths in vital registration. Very quickly, the genealogist realizes that the code corresponds to that of a death certificate of Albert Beck, stabbed in 1879 in the same place the same day as the first victim of the killer. Apparently, the killer mimics the actual murders by a serial killer in London in the late 19th century. While the police are using traditional methods, the genealogist is trying to understand the workings and motives of the psychopath by analyzing records and criminal records of Victorian London. A race against the clock begins to stop harm the killer before it completes its grisly task and finally disappears ...
Dan Waddell has embarked on a gamble by choosing to make a genealogist the hero of a detective series . It is generally believed that the genealogy is a hobby of retired white-haired-love above all the silence and dust of the archives room. Frankly nothing glamorous or thrilling. And yet, his hero, Nigel Barnes, literally grabs you when it launches with greed in the footsteps of the killer, stripping the state registers Civil and newspapers of the 19th century. His unstoppable approach, the way the survey has evolved over the genealogical findings and unbearable suspense of the last fifty pages where everything is happening according to the result of his research ... There is enough here to pick the most reluctant readers.
Oh, there are a few pitfalls. Already, the writing (or translation) is not exceptional. It's okay, nothing more. Then one wonders why, when the countdown to the final murder is under way, police do not appeal to other genealogists to accelerate historical research. Finally, the figure of the inspector conducting the inquiry has all the cliches of the genre: a gruff loner cop in charge who spent his free time drinking wine, it has already done more original. But these few shortcomings are swept with a wave of the hand when one is immersed in this implacable mechanism where the pieces fall into place one after the other before the final apotheosis.
It is wrong to see a thriller of such high quality has passed completely unnoticed at the time of its release in the month October. Probably a timing problem. This is typically the kind of book to enjoy on the beach in summer. In any case I'd have warned. On to business here at very good in the genre. And if you're a fan of the TV series Cold Case , tell yourself that this Code 1879 is for you!
Code 1879 , Dan Waddell, Rouergue, 2010. 280 pages. 20 euros.
The more info: Dan Waddell has released a second volume of adventures the genealogist in August 2009. Hopefully the first game will be successful enough that the editions of Rouergue decide to publish it in France.
